Agnieszka Lesiak – “IT tools in school”

“Nowadays, we have more and more students with special educational needs”
Agnieszka Lesiak, Director of the Jan Twardowski school in Nowa Wieś. The school was established in 1907 and now has 132 pupils, including 93 in primary school and 40 in kindergarten departments.
Nowadays, we have more and more students with special educational needs. These students are often children with autism that have problems with functioning in a social environment, but also those with learning difficulties – mathematics is usually the main issue. Currently, 6% of our pupils have intellectual disabilities.
We use various methods of psychological and pedagogical assistance. Children have revitalization, corrective and compensatory classes. Meetings with specialists are organized, i.e. psychologists, educators and external therapists. We also closely cooperate with parents. We individualize the work in lessons so that these children feel like a part of the whole class. They participate in group work and answer at the board, which makes them interested in the subject, but also helps integrate with their class. In mathematics classes, but not only, we very often use programs such as Quiziz, Kahoot, so students use a tablet, iPhone or smartphone to complete quizzes. For the Generation Z, smartphones are a basic tool, which they really like to use.
Using IT tools changed the mind-set of teachers and made students more interested in lessons. Questions that are neither too hard nor too easy keep their attention and prevent them from becoming bored. Solving tasks using the Internet is quick and provides instant feedback which helps us evaluate the students learning process.
Today it is practically necessary to use the Internet during every lesson. For example: the WebQuest is a lesson format in which most or all of the information that students work with comes from the web. They can carry out projects using the Internet, where they search for information, prepare and develop a project in a specific time frame and have specific tasks. In the end they also present the project using IT tools. Schools should adapt to newer times.
Questions for reflection
- What tools should the teacher use to motivate students to do activities?
- How to approach each student individually?
- Why is learning through play important?
